Sandakan

AUGUST 12/13: SAN DIEGO/SAN FRANCISCO/SINGAPORE/KUALA LUMPUR

Depart the USA early this morning and, crossing the International Date Line, arrive next evening in Kuala Lumpur. After clearing customs, you will be transferred to your airport hotel for overnight.

AUGUST 14: KUALA LUMPUR/SANDAKAN/SIM SIM WATER VILLAGE

Your morning flight takes you to Sandakan, mountainous with lush tropical forests. En route to your hotel, enjoy a visit to Sandakan Market and the Sim Sim Water Village. At your ecoresort, enjoy a welcome dinner. 

AUGUST 15: LABUK BAY/ SUN BEAR CONSERVATION CENTER/SEPILOK ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION CENTER

After breakfast, head to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary to observe this unique primate at close range. Later this morning, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre at Sepilok. Continue on to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center to observe feeding time for the orangutans.

AUGUST 16: SEPILOK ORANGUTAN CENTER/SUKAU

Return to the Orangutan Center for a morning feeding with these magnificent great apes and then proceed to Sukau village. Embark by boat along the Kinabatangan River to see proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants in their mangrove habitat.

AUGUST 17: SUKAU

Wake up to the raucous calls of gibbons and hornbills and take an early morning river cruise on the Kinabatangan River. Look for the stork-billed kingfisher, Oriental darter (“snake bird”), and gray-headed fish eagle. Enjoy another wildlife cruise in the afternoon and a night safari cruise after dinner to spot nocturnal mammals, crocodiles, and birds.

AUGUST 18 SUKAU ~ OX BOW LAKE

After breakfast, proceed to Ox Bow Lake, which is ideal for bird-watching and occasionally spotting orangutans. Later in the morning, tour a nearby village and enjoy tea hosted by the locals. Later in the afternoon, depart on a river cruise to observe the flora and fauna of the area. 

 

AUGUST 19/20/21: SUKAU/DANUM VALLEY

Drive to Sabah’s largest protected lowland forest, Danum Valley Conservation Area. This supports one of the largest remaining populations of wild orangutans, which you may spot under the guidance of expert trackers. Although some animals are elusive, an incredible diversity of flora and fauna is found here, including Asian elephants, Sumatran rhinoceroses, and some of the world’s largest butterflies and moths.

AUGUST 22: DANUM VALLEY/ LAHAD DATU/KOTA KINABALU/KUALA LUMPUR

Enjoy your day at leisure before transferring to Lahad Datu airport for your flight to Kuala Lumpur, via Kota Kinabalu. You will transfer to your airport hotel for your overnight.

AUGUST 23: KUALA LUMPUR/SINGAPORE/SAN FRANCISCO/SAN DIEGO

Early morning transfer to the airport for your return flights home, via Singapore and San Francisco.

Amy Parrott, Director of Individual and Planned Gifts

With a name like Amy Parrott, it’s only fitting that this animal lover and fundraiser has worked for San Diego Zoo Global for more than 30 years. As the Director of Individual and Planned Gifts, Amy and her team have raised funds to build an incredible array of exhibits and facilities at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park including Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks, Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey, and Tull Family Tiger Trail.

A longtime member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Amy has served on the board in several capacities, including president and vice president for education. Currently, Amy serves on the AFP Foundation Board.

Amy is passionate about wildlife and conservation, and she has generated support for the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research for endangered species such as the giant panda, California condor, southern white and greater one-horned rhinoceros, and cheetah.

Amy loves to travel and oversees the Zoo’s WorldWild Tours program. Her adventures have taken her to China, India, Turkey, and Greece as well as Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Madagascar. Recently, Amy traveled to Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Borneo and is looking forward to returning to Borneo to see the proboscis monkeys and orangutans.
