The ultimate giant panda experience! This grand China tour offers ample opportunities to encounter giant pandas at breeding centers in Chengdu and Dujiangyan. In addition, you'll stroll along the Great Wall and explore Beijing's Forbidden City. Also, marvel at the famous Terra-Cotta Warriors in Xian, cruise down the lovely Yangtze River through the extraordinary Three Gorges, and soak in the cosmopolitan vitality of Shanghai.

May 14-15—U.S.-Beijing

Depart the U.S. on your flight to Beijing. Cross the international dateline and arrive in China the next day. Transfer to the NewWorld Beijing Hotel (3 nights).

May 16—Beijing Day 1

Explore the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. Enjoy lunch at the Hua’s Garden Restaurant.

May 17—Beijing Day 2

Explore the picturesque Houhai district by pedicab. Visit with a local family in their home.  Visit the Great Wall of China.  Enjoy lunch at Xiaolongpu Restaurant near the wall.  Savor the imperial city’s famous Peking duck and other specialties for dinner.

May 18—Beijing-Xian

Fly to Xian and visit the extraordinary 2,300-year-old Terra-Cotta Warriors. Explore the Grand Mosque.  Stay the night at the Gran Melia Xian hotel.

May 19—Xian-Chengdu

Visit the Han Emperor's Tomb and Yangling Museum. Fly to Chengdu and transfer to the Sheraton Chengdu Lido Hotel. Stroll along Jinli Street, a thriving artisan district.

May 20—Chengdu

Visit the Chengdu Panda Breeding Center. Meet with nearly 60 pandas and their caregivers. The highlight comes at the kindergarten where panda cubs play. Explore the Kuanzhaixianzi shopping district. Enjoy a hot pot dinner and Sichuan opera performance in the evening.

May 21—Chengdu–Dujiangyan

Return to the Chengdu Panda Breeding Center and spend extra time with the panda cubs in the kindergarten. Drive through the countryside to Dujiangyan and tour the Taoist Qingchengshan Mountain.

May 22—Dujiangyan–Chongqing

Visit the Dujiangyan Panda Park, operated by Wolong Panda Preserve. There you will help the panda keepers with their daily routines and have your photo taken with a panda. Then drive to Chengdu and take a bullet train to Chongqing, where you board the Victoria Katarina ship.

May 23-24—Yangtze River Cruise

Travel through the spectacular Three Gorges (called Qutang, Wu, and Xiling), enjoying the dramatic scenery and beautiful vistas as they appear. Along the way, disembark to enjoy activities onshore. Tour Immigration Village and see the breathtaking Lesser Gorge Danninghe. An amazing experience is coming face-to-face with the spectacular Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping. The largest construction site in the world is also China’s latest effort to tame the Yangzi River.

May 25—Yichang–Shanghai

Disembark the cruise at Yichang and fly to Shanghai. The evening is at your leisure.

May 26—Shanghai

Visit Yuyuan Garden in old Shanghai and tour the Shanghai Museum.  Enjoy your farewell banquet and then stroll along the Bund, viewing the colonial buildings along the Huangpu River.

May 27—Shanghai-U.S.

Transfer to Shanghai airport for your flight home. Arrive in the U.S. on the same day.

Lacey Lee, Senior Individual and Planned Gifts officer

Lacey Lee began working at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 and feels fortunate to be part of such an amazing organization.  She enjoys meeting and working with the Zoo’s generous supporters as well as getting to know those who are passionate about wildlife and conservation.

Lacey has a great love of all wildlife, and some of her favorite memories include growing up in Oregon and Idaho, where there was never a lack of beautiful scenery to enjoy.  Although she has called San Diego home since 1998, Lacey still enjoys visiting family in Idaho as often as she can.  

Recent travels to Italy, Greece, and Turkey have given Lacey a deeper appreciation for other cultures and customs.  Making new friends from all over the world and enjoying amazing cuisine are highlights from her time spent in these beautiful countries.
